Tope Ayanwale, a 34-year-old woman, has been sentenced to three years in prison for her involvement in a major drug trafficking case in Benin, Edo State. The Federal High Court, presided over by Honourable Justice B. O. Quadiri, found Ayanwale guilty of possessing large quantities of illicit drugs, including cannabis, methamphetamine, and tramadol. She was given the option of paying a ₦10 million fine instead of serving her prison sentence.

The court also sentenced two other drug traffickers, Etinosa Bazuaye and Godfrey Osabuohien, to 15-year jail terms each for their roles in separate cases. Bazuaye was found guilty of possessing cocaine, while Osabuohien was convicted of possessing cannabis.

Ayanwale collapsed in the courtroom after hearing her sentence and required immediate medical attention before being taken into custody to begin her sentence.

The judiciary's firm stance against drug trafficking is a welcome development, particularly in Edo State where the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has been working tirelessly to dismantle networks and prosecute offenders. The sentencing of Tope Ayanwale and two other drug traffickers sends a clear message that the state will not tolerate the scourge of illicit drugs. This ruling aligns with the NDLEA's renewed vigour under the leadership of Chairman/Chief Executive Officer Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (RTD) to rid the nation of the devastating consequences of substance abuse. The NDLEA's commitment to ridding the state and nation of illicit drugs is a positive step towards addressing the root causes of insecurity and societal decay.
