A fan has died after falling from a box seat area at Mexico City's newly renovated Estadio Banorte, a stadium scheduled to host the FIFA 2026 World Cup opening ceremony later this summer. The incident occurred on Saturday, just as the stadium was hosting a friendly match between Mexico and Portugal, which was intended to serve as a stress test for the facility. According to security officials, the man was intoxicated and attempted to jump from the second-level box seats to the first level by climbing along the exterior of the structure before falling to the ground floor. The Mexico City Prosecutor's Office is investigating the death, and a statement has been released, saying that the office will continue the investigations thoroughly and keep the public informed as relevant developments are obtained.

The Mexican Football Federation has expressed condolences for the death of the fan and stated that its priority is safeguarding the safety of those inside stadiums. The Banorte Stadium is slated to host five matches, including the inaugural match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup between Mexico and South Africa on June 11. This incident is not the first time a sports fan has faced injuries after falling from the stands, with a similar incident occurring last April at a baseball game in Pittsburgh.

The stadium's reopening match was delayed for a few minutes after the incident, and many players were seen taking a knee in a show of respect. The investigation into the fan's death is ongoing, with the statutory post-mortem procedure currently underway to establish the cause of death and physical condition of the individual at the time of the fall.
