Chief Michael Aondoakaa, former Attorney General of the Federation, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress.
In a statement signed personally, Aondoakaa announced his resignation, effective from March 28. The move has sparked intense discussions among Benue State residents, particularly as Aondoakaa had been a top contender for the APC's governorship ticket in the state.
Aondoakaa stated that his decision to leave the APC was the result of careful consideration and consultations with his family, political associates, and supporters. "Prevailing circumstances make it necessary for me to take this step," he said, adding that his decision was in the interest of his people and democratic values.
Aondoakaa expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his "visionary leadership" and the support Benue State has received under his administration. He assured Tinubu that his loyalty to the Renewed Hope Agenda remains unchanged.
The former minister also acknowledged the role of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, in shaping the political landscape of Benue State. However, Aondoakaa's next move remains unclear, with sources close to the matter suggesting that he is eyeing the Peoples Democratic Party.
Aondoakaa's decision to leave the APC may have significant implications for the 2027 governorship election in Benue State. His potential move to the PDP could create a power vacuum in the APC, potentially opening the door for other aspirants to follow suit. As the 2027 election draws closer, every step by prominent politicians like Aondoakaa will be closely watched. The question now is whether Aondoakaa's move will shake up the political landscape in Benue State and alter the calculations of both the APC and PDP.
