Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted a large consignment of cocaine concealed in the heads of imported dry stock fish. The agency said the cocaine seizure followed intelligence on a trans-border drug syndicate involved in trafficking narcotics to destinations including India. A 36-year-old suspect, Akputa Dickson Ejike, was arrested with three jumbo bags containing 237 wraps of cocaine weighing 5.8 kilograms. The consignment was reportedly bound for Delhi, India.

In a separate operation, NDLEA operatives intercepted two consignments at a courier company in Lagos, containing 1.9 kilograms of methamphetamine and 40 ampoules of morphine sulphate. Another operation in Lagos led to the arrest of a suspected drug kingpin, Omolade Abigail Jolayemi, and her associate, Sarah Zainab Agbabiaka.

The agency's operations also led to the seizure of significant quantities of illicit drugs across the country. In Ekiti State, an 80-year-old man was arrested with 2.2 kilograms of skunk and 1.8 grams of methamphetamine. In Ondo State, officers seized 894.72 kilograms of skunk from a suspect. The NDLEA Chairman, Mohamed Buba Marwa, commended officers involved in the operations, praising their efforts in balancing drug supply reduction with preventive advocacy initiatives.

The recent operations by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have exposed a sophisticated drug syndicate involved in trafficking narcotics to destinations including India. The agency's success in intercepting large consignments of cocaine and other illicit drugs is a testament to the bravery and dedication of its officers. However, the sheer volume of illicit drugs seized in these operations raises concerns about the scale of the problem and the need for more effective measures to prevent drug trafficking in Nigeria. The NDLEA's War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign is a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to address the root causes of drug addiction and trafficking.
