Residents of Enugu State are being encouraged to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in preparation for the 2027 general elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made it clear that having a valid PVC is essential for participating in the elections. This message was conveyed by Chukwuemeka Chukwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Enugu State, during an interview.
The commission has designated various registration centres, including ward locations, where residents can pick up their uncollected cards. These centres are accessible during the ongoing rotations. Mr Chukwu emphasized that registration is free and urged residents to take advantage of the opportunity to avoid a last-minute rush.
The CVR portal will not end abruptly but will be paused periodically in line with the phases of the exercise. Voter registration will continue ahead of the 2027 general elections, and the exercise also accommodates fresh registrations, data updates, and the transfer of voter details for individuals who have relocated.
The current CVR is part of a phased process that began nationwide on August 18, 2025, and initially ended on December 10, 2025. It has now entered its second phase, which commenced on January 5 and is expected to run until April 17, 2026. After each registration phase, INEC conducts a "claims and objections" period, during which registrants verify and correct their details before final processing.
The recent call by INEC for residents of Enugu State to collect their PVCs and register for the CVR is a timely reminder of the importance of civic participation in Nigeria's democratic process. Chukwuemeka Chukwu's emphasis on the free registration and the need for residents to take advantage of the ongoing exercise is a welcome move. However, the fact that many Nigerians still struggle to access their PVCs and register for the CVR raises questions about the effectiveness of INEC's outreach efforts. As the 2027 general elections approach, it is crucial that INEC and other stakeholders work together to ensure that all eligible citizens have the opportunity to participate in the electoral process.
