A Benin City Chief Magistrate Court has remanded a 30-year-old man, Oghomwentiti Best Uwagboe, for allegedly assaulting a BEDC Electricity Plc staff member during an official assignment. The incident occurred when a female BEDC official visited Uwagboe's residence to perform her duties. Uwagboe allegedly became violent and damaged the official's phone. The BEDC staff member fell and sustained injuries while trying to escape and was rushed to a hospital for treatment. The matter was reported to the police, leading to Uwagboe's arrest and subsequent charging to court.
The suspect pleaded not guilty to all charges but was granted bail by the Chief Magistrate. However, he was ordered to be remanded in prison custody pending the fulfilment of his bail terms. The case has been adjourned till March 31, 2026, for further hearing. In a related development, the Regional Head of BEDC, Henry Onovwaka, has warned that the company will take the matter seriously and may pursue civil action for damages caused.
The BEDC's warning that it may pursue civil action against Uwagboe for damages caused sends a clear message that assaults on its staff will not be tolerated. The Regional Head's stance is a welcome development, as it underscores the importance of protecting workers who risk their lives to provide essential services. Everyday Nigerians rely on BEDC staff to keep the lights on, and it is the responsibility of the company and the government to ensure their safety. The fact that Uwagboe was granted bail despite pleading not guilty raises questions about the effectiveness of the justice system in addressing violent crimes. As the case unfolds, NaijaBuzz will be watching to see how the court handles this matter and whether justice is served.
