**Kano Govt Wins Round as Court Refuses to Stop Retrieval of Official Vehicles**
In a recent development, the Kano State Government has been given the green light by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria to retrieve official vehicles from former commissioners who resigned from the State Executive Council. The decision marks a significant victory for the government as it seeks to reclaim vehicles allocated to the former commissioners while they were in office.
The dispute revolves around the retention of official vehicles by the former commissioners, who argue that they are entitled to keep the vehicles as part of their conditions of service. However, the Kano State Government contends that the vehicles are state property and must be returned to the government upon resignation or termination of service.
The five former commissioners, who include Dr Yusuf Ibrahim K/Mata, AVM Ibrahim Umar (rtd), Nasir Sule Garo, Adamu Aliyu Kibiya, and Mustapha Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, had approached the court seeking an interim injunction to prevent the government from taking back the vehicles. Their application was, however, rejected by Justice Mahmood Abba Namtari, who directed that the defendants be put on notice.
The ruling has significant implications for the administration of public assets in Nigeria. It highlights the need for clear guidelines on the retention of official vehicles by public officials, particularly those in the executive council. The decision also underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in the management of public resources.
While the former commissioners may still seek to contest the government's right to reclaim the vehicles, the court's ruling has given the state a significant advantage. The cases have been adjourned to March 10 for the hearing of the substantive applications, where the court will determine the final outcome of the dispute.
