Cinecittà Studios in Rome are back on track, announcing a modest €1.1 million ($1.2 million) operating profit for 2025. This turnaround comes after a dismal 2024, where the studios suffered a significant $12 million loss. The facility's fortunes have changed, thanks in part to a major revamp, which has attracted big-name Hollywood productions.
Mel Gibson's "The Resurrection of the Christ" is in its final stages of production, while Denzel Washington is set to star in Antoine Fuqua's untitled Netflix movie, which is expected to start filming this summer. The Netflix live-action "Assassin's Creed" series, directed by Johan Renck, has already begun shooting at Cinecittà and is expected to run for seven months.
Italian productions, such as Marco Bellocchio's HBO series "Portobello," have also been shooting at the facility. Cinecittà CEO Manuela Cacciamani credits the studio's commercial activities for its international success, citing a significant increase in recruitment and sales.
The studio's turnover grew by €8.9 million ($10 million) in 2025, reaching €30.5 million ($35 million), while its EBITDA jumped to €14 million ($16 million) from €7 million ($8 million) the previous year.
Cinecittà's €233 million ($268 million) loan from the European Union's post-pandemic recovery fund has been instrumental in the studio's revamp, which is expected to be completed by June 2026. The revamped facility will boast 25 state-of-the-art sound stages, 10 hectares of backlot, and 21,000 square meters of production office space.
The success of Cinecittà Studios is a testament to the power of investment and revamp in the film industry. As Nigeria continues to produce talented filmmakers and actors, it's interesting to note how international studios like Cinecittà are adapting to changing times. The influx of big-name Hollywood productions at Cinecittà Studios is a clear indication that the film industry is thriving globally.
