Former Chairman of the Governing Council of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, has been received in a private audience by Pope Francis at the Vatican City.
The meeting marked a moment of spiritual reflection and thanksgiving for the veteran administrator, who undertook the pilgrimage to seek apostolic blessings and mark the conclusion of a significant chapter in his public service career.
Sir Ohaa, on Friday, was accompanied by John Onaiyekan, whose presence added deep ecclesiastical significance to the visit.
The delegation symbolised the enduring bond between Nigerian Catholic faithful and the global leadership of the Holy See.
During the audience, Sir Ohaa participated in moments of prayer and reflection and received a formal blessing from the Pontiff, a gesture traditionally extended to individuals who have completed notable periods of service or leadership.
Observers say the visit represents a spiritual transition for the retired Federal Permanent Secretary, formally marking the end of his tenure at ESUT while affirming the values of faith, humility and service that defined his leadership.
Beyond its symbolic importance, the Vatican audience also reinforced the spiritual ties between Nigeria’s Catholic laity and the Holy See, reflecting the growing presence and influence of Nigerian Catholics within the global Church.
Speaking after the meeting, Sir Ohaa described the encounter as both humbling and reflective.
“Service to humanity is an extension of service to God. This visit is a moment of gratitude for the opportunity to have led ESUT and a chance to seek divine guidance for the chapters ahead,” he said.
Sir Ohaa, a seasoned public administrator and respected figure in Nigeria’s civil service, served for decades before retiring as a Federal Permanent Secretary.
His tenure as chairman of the ESUT Governing Council was widely noted for strengthening institutional stability and reinforcing the university’s academic focus.
From the demanding responsibilities of university governance to the serene spiritual atmosphere of the Vatican, the visit underscores Sir Ohaa’s enduring commitment to leadership anchored on faith, integrity and service.
