The ICPC has released former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai from custody, a move that is believed to be on compassionate grounds following the death of his mother in Egypt. The release came after El-Rufai's son, Bashir, announced the news on X on Friday. El-Rufai's mother, Hajiya Umma, reportedly passed away in Cairo earlier that day.
The former governor has been in custody since February 18, 2026, facing multiple high-profile legal battles involving allegations of financial misconduct, money laundering, and national security breaches. He was formally arraigned at the Federal High Court in Kaduna on March 24, 2026, alongside co-defendant Joel Adoga. The charges include alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering.
El-Rufai has also been charged by the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Federal High Court in Abuja, with allegations of unlawful interception of phone communications belonging to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. His arraignment in the matter has been scheduled for April 23, 2026.
The ICPC's decision to release El-Rufai on compassionate grounds raises questions about the fairness of his ongoing trials. The former governor is facing multiple charges, including financial misconduct and national security breaches, which carry significant penalties. The release from custody, however brief, may be seen as a gesture of goodwill, but it also underscores the need for the authorities to expedite the trial process. With multiple cases pending against him, El-Rufai's future remains uncertain, and the impact of these trials on his reputation and finances will be significant.
