The All Progressives Congress (APC) has concluded its 4th elective National Convention in Abuja. The convention, themed "Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda," saw the emergence of new officials for the party's National Working Committee (NWC). Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda has been returned as the National Chairman of the APC, while Surajudeen Basiru emerged as National Secretary.
The Convention Election Committee announced the results, which were achieved through consensus. This means that the new officials were chosen without a contest. President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other high-ranking government officials were present at the convention.
However, the convention also saw the removal of two officials from the NWC. Emmanuel Enekwu, the party's Deputy National Chairman, and Hon. Chidi Duru, the Deputy National Organizing Secretary, have been dropped from the committee. The convention was organised by a planning committee led by former Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Anyim Pius Anyim.
The convention was held at Eagle Square in Abuja on Friday night. The event saw the attendance of prominent government officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
The return of Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda as APC National Chairman and Surajudeen Basiru as National Secretary raises questions about the party's commitment to internal democracy. The removal of Emmanuel Enekwu and Hon. Chidi Duru from the NWC without explanation is particularly concerning. Everyday Nigerians will be watching to see how this new leadership will impact party policies and governance. The APC's Renewed Hope Agenda, touted as a unifying force, may need to be re-examined in light of these developments. It remains to be seen how this new leadership will navigate the complexities of party politics and the country's economic challenges.
