Benue varsity ASUU threatens strike
**Benue Varsity Lecturers Threaten Strike Over Unpaid Salaries and Benefits**
In a disturbing development, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branch of Father Adasu University in Makurdi, Benue State, has threatened to embark on an industrial action over unresolved welfare issues affecting its members. The union listed the outstanding issues to include unpaid salary arrears, promotion benefits, and irregularities in pension remittances.
According to a communique issued by the branch secretary, Daniel Chile, the union has been engaging with the university administration to resolve these issues, but to no avail. The ASUU congress, held in January, directed the branch executive committee to remind the university management of the long-standing welfare matters affecting staff.
The issues at stake include the outstanding balance of 22 months of unpaid salaries linked to the national minimum wage, promotion arrears owed to some staff members dating back to 2018, and inconsistencies in the remittance of contributory pension deductions to staff pension accounts. The union also reported shortfalls and omissions in the payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) to some lecturers.
Despite the union's efforts to engage with the university administration, the management failed to provide any clear timeline for resolving the issues. The union has even forwarded the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement to the university management for the second time under the current vice-chancellor's administration.
The union has warned that continued delays could trigger stronger action, including an industrial strike. If meaningful progress is not made, the union will be compelled to activate the appropriate mechanisms available to it, including the option of industrial action.
The threat of an industrial strike by the Benue varsity lecturers is a worrying development that could disrupt academic activities in the state. It is hoped that the university administration will take immediate action to resolve the outstanding issues and prevent a strike.
