The wife of Bayelsa State Governor, Gloria Diri, has been accused of failing to fulfill her promise to offer a scholarship to Nancy Wilfred, a 19-year-old girl from Imo State who was assaulted in Bayelsa State last year. According to reports, Mrs Diri took custody of Nancy on September 3, 2025, and promised to ensure justice for the assaulted girl. However, Nancy and her mother claimed that they received only N5,000 and N10,000 respectively from the Gender Response Initiative Team (GRIT) in Government House, Yenagoa, despite Mrs Diri's initial promise of a university scholarship.
Nancy had obtained a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Form in preparation for her enrolment into a university. However, she and her mother reportedly left Bayelsa State for Delta State, and the GRIT team, which works under Mrs Diri, allegedly refused to respond to their calls.
The alleged failure of the Bayelsa First Lady to keep her promise of a university scholarship to Nancy Wilfred raises concerns about the accountability of public figures in Nigeria. This incident highlights the need for clear communication and follow-through on promises made by those in positions of authority.
