Power outages have plagued Nigeria in recent weeks, leaving many to suffer in the scorching heat of the dry season. The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has acknowledged the challenges facing the sector and apologised to Nigerians for the hardships experienced. In a press conference, he attributed the current difficulties to gas supply shortfalls to generation companies due to outstanding debts owed to gas suppliers.
Adelabu hinted that the ongoing war in the Middle East could further exacerbate the problems. He suggested scaling up renewable energy solutions, particularly off-grid and mini-grid systems, to address the challenge. The minister believes that renewable energy offers a cost-effective and sustainable pathway to expand access to power without overburdening the national grid.
The power minister also called for the integration of additional renewable energy into the grid to diversify energy sources and reduce overall generation costs. This would involve investments in grid monitoring and control systems and system planning to effectively manage intermittency while maintaining grid stability.
