Retired Brig.-Gen. Kalu Egwuagu has declared his intention to run for the Imo West Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general elections under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Speaking at a meeting with members of the Izombe Central Union (ICU) in Abuja on Tuesday, Egwuagu, a native of Izombe in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, pledged to address insecurity, agriculture, and education if elected. He cited his military background as key to tackling security challenges, referencing past roles in brokering peace between the Ijaw and Ilaje in Ondo State, the Gembu and Mambilla in Taraba, and resolving a security crisis in Izombe.
Egwuagu emphasized that insecurity in Imo West cannot be resolved in isolation, arguing that peace must extend across Imo State and the South-East for lasting impact. He linked the region's suffering to poor representation and said his campaign aims to bring change through experience and community-focused policies. Education reform, particularly in primary and secondary schools, and boosting food production through ranching, are among his priority areas.
Chairman of ICU Abuja, Mr Valentine Onwuka, praised Egwuagu's commitment to the community, with other members including Rev. Eze Obizue, Chief Jude Fadas, Alex Ihesie and Uzoma Okorafor acknowledging his past contributions and offering support.
A retired general promising to fix insecurity is not new politics—it's recycled expectation dressed as revelation. Kalu Egwuagu's track record in conflict mediation may carry weight, but senatorial mandates don't command armies. Nigerians in Imo West should ask how legislative tools will translate his military experience into actionable policy, not just patriotic promises.
