Two people died and 12 were injured in a crash involving a commercial bus and a trailer at Oloriegbè community along the Ogbomosho–Oloru road in Ilorin, Kwara State. The incident occurred at around 7:10 a.m. on Thursday. The Toyota Hiace bus, with registration number BTR 161 XA and driven by Abubakar Musa, collided with a faulty DAF trailer abandoned on the road. The trailer had no visible registration number at the time. Bloodstains were still visible at the scene when reporters arrived. The injured were taken to University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and Arewa Medical Centre. The bodies of the deceased were moved to medical facilities.
Kwara State FRSC Sector Commander Muftau Adebayo Irekeola confirmed 19 people were involved: 17 adult males, one adult female, and one female child. Twelve, including the two females, suffered fractures and suspected internal injuries. Five escaped unharmed. Irekeola attributed the crash to driver fatigue, speeding, and loss of control. He urged drivers to rest before long trips and to obey traffic rules.
A trailer abandoned on a major road with no registration raises serious questions about pre-crash enforcement. Muftau Adebayo Irekeola pointed to driver error, but no agency has explained how a broken-down heavy vehicle was left unattended in a high-risk zone. If such lapses go unchecked, blaming drivers alone will not reduce Kwara's road fatalities. This crash exposes gaps in both vehicle monitoring and roadside safety protocols.
