World Cup Qualifiers: FIFA sanctions Nigeria, DR Congo
**FIFA Sanctions Nigeria and DR Congo for World Cup Qualifier Misbehaviour**
The world football governing body, FIFA, has issued sanctions to both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Congolese Football Association following a series of disciplinary incidents recorded during their 2026 World Cup qualifying match on November 16, 2025.
According to FIFA's latest disciplinary report, the two football bodies were found guilty of separate infractions during the much-anticipated match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Red Devils of DR Congo.
The NFF was fined 1,000 Swiss Francs for a breach involving order and security at the match, specifically the throwing of objects by spectators. This infraction falls under Article 17 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
The Congolese federation, however, received a heavier sanction after their fans were found to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the match, which contravenes Article 17.2.d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The DR Congo Football Association was fined 5,000 Swiss Francs for this infraction.
It's worth noting that the sanctions are subject to appeal, and the official legal decisions are communicated directly to the concerned federations.
The match between Nigeria and DR Congo has been a talking point since the Super Eagles' heartbreaking defeat to the Red Devils last November. Nigeria's hopes of advancing further in the qualification series were dashed after they lost to DR Congo on penalties in the final round of the African qualifying play-offs.
Following that defeat, the NFF submitted a formal petition to FIFA, questioning the eligibility of several DR Congo players. The protest centres on the argument that DR Congo's domestic law does not recognize one of the players, which has sparked a lot of debate among football fans in Nigeria.
The sanctions by FIFA serve as a reminder that football authorities will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against teams and their fans for misbehaviour. As Nigeria and DR Congo look to move forward, they will have to put these incidents behind them and focus on preparing for future matches.
