We’re not at war with Ogun, Eba Island belongs to Ondo, Aiyedatiwa declares
**Eba Island Dispute: Ondo Governor Clears the Air, Says State Owns the Island**
In a recent interview, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has clarified the long-standing dispute between Ondo and Ogun states over the ownership of Eba Island. The governor emphasized that Ondo State maintains its claim on the island, which is located in the Ilaje Local Government Area.
While speaking with journalists at the Government House in Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa stated that discussions with Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, were cordial and focused on accurately determining the location of oil assets, not on disputing ownership. He emphasized that the state has no objection to oil exploration in the area, provided that the activities are properly licensed by the Federal Government.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also clarified that oil assets and wells in Nigeria belong to the Federal Government, but the location of these assets must be clearly established to determine the benefiting state and host communities. He noted that the Federal Government gives licenses to oil companies to drill in various parts of the country, including Ondo State.
In a bid to allay fears of conflict between the two states, Governor Aiyedatiwa assured that Ondo State is not at war with Ogun State over Eba Island. He stated that the issue at hand is simply a matter of clearly defining the location of the oil assets, which he believes falls within Ondo State's territorial boundary.
This clarification comes as a welcome development in the ongoing dispute over Eba Island. With the oil industry playing a significant role in Nigeria's economy, it is essential that disputes over oil-rich territories are resolved amicably to avoid any potential conflicts. As the debate over Eba Island continues, Governor Aiyedatiwa's statement serves as a reminder that the primary concern is the accurate mapping of oil assets to ensure the rights of all parties involved are respected.
