Very little income, long working hours – Drivers on Bolt platform lament
**Naija Drivers on Bolt Platform Lament Over Low Income and Long Working Hours**
In Lagos, drivers working on the popular ride-hailing platform, Bolt, have spoken out about their struggles with low income and long working hours. The drivers, who are part of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), say they face numerous challenges that make it difficult for them to earn a decent living.
According to AUATON, the main issues drivers face are rising fuel prices, high vehicle maintenance costs, and increasing operational expenses. Despite working long hours every day, many drivers are left with very little income after the Bolt platform deducts its commission and operational costs.
"This situation is not only unfair but also threatens the livelihood and dignity of thousands of hardworking drivers who depend on this work to support their families," said Steven Iwindoye, the Public Relations Officer of AUATON.
Iwindoye noted that the rising cost of operations has not been matched by an increase in fares offered to drivers through the platform, making their earnings unsustainable. He also highlighted other concerns such as safety issues, unfair account deactivations, and policies introduced without adequate consultation with the drivers' community.
The drivers have attended several meetings with Bolt in the past, hoping for meaningful solutions to their problems. However, many of these engagements have not led to practical improvements for drivers.
At this critical moment, drivers are demanding real reforms, fair pricing structures, transparent policies, and stronger protection for those who power the platform. AUATON is calling for unity among drivers and caution regarding a proposed roundtable meeting until there is clear evidence that it will lead to genuine solutions.
This situation raises important questions about the treatment of drivers in the gig economy, particularly in Nigeria where many people rely on ride-hailing platforms as a source of income. As the debate continues, it is clear that drivers are demanding a better deal and a more sustainable working environment.
