Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has reacted to a recent United States security advisory on travel to Nigeria. The advisory, issued on May 22, 2024, warned US citizens against non-essential travel to Nigeria due to crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest. It listed specific regions including the Northwest, Northeast, and parts of the Southeast and North Central as high-risk zones. Obi described the advisory as a bad omen for Nigeria's image and development. He quoted from the advisory, noting its mention of "a nation where people cannot live, work, worship, or travel safely cannot progress or prosper." The former governor posted his reaction on social media, urging citizens to reflect on the country's current state. He did not propose specific policy solutions but emphasized the gravity of the security situation. The US advisory also highlighted risks to aviation, maritime, and road travel, and advised against travel to Abuja's outskirts and all areas near the Niger and Cameroon borders. No new attacks or incidents triggered the advisory, which updated existing guidance.
