A US-based Palestinian activist has narrowly escaped an assassination plot after law enforcement agencies foiled a plan to throw Molotov cocktails at her home.
Nerdeen Kiswani, the 31-year-old cofounder of the activist group Within Our Lifetime, was informed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of a threat against her life late on Thursday. According to Kiswani, law enforcement agencies had conducted an operation in Hoboken, New Jersey, related to the plot. The suspect, identified as Andrew Heifler, 26, was reportedly arrested while assembling Molotov cocktails to throw at Kiswani's home.
Heifler, a New Jersey man, has been charged with counts of making and possessing destructive devices. Kiswani expressed gratitude that the plot was thwarted but noted that such threats are a constant possibility for individuals who speak up on behalf of Palestine. The incident highlights the high levels of harassment and surveillance faced by Palestinian rights activists in the US, particularly from government authorities and far-right pro-Israel groups.
The FBI's operation was part of a weeks-long investigation, during which Heifler discussed his plans with an undercover agent. The agent reportedly met with Heifler at his Hoboken residence, where he was carrying components to make Molotov cocktails. Law enforcement executed a search warrant on the home, recovering eight Molotov cocktails.
