UNILAG speaks on ASUU strike, says examination continues
University of Lagos Stays Firm on Exams Amidst ASUU Strike
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced that exams will continue uninterrupted despite the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff of Universities (ASUU) in the institution. This development comes after the ASUU-UNILAG chapter declared an indefinite strike earlier on Tuesday, citing issues with salaries and allowances.
According to the union, the university had failed to pay some lecturers in full for January and February, as well as withheld the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) and Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA). However, the university management disputes this, claiming that the strike was declared without following due process.
In a statement, the university management expressed concern that the strike would disrupt the exams currently underway, especially for students who are scheduled to participate in work experience schemes, internships, or the Law School. Despite this, the university has decided to proceed with exams scheduled for Wednesday, except for departments that have already announced postponements.
From Thursday, 12 March 2026, all exams will continue as planned, and deans have been instructed to make necessary arrangements to ensure a smooth and successful exam period. This decision is likely to be welcomed by students who are eager to complete their exams and move forward in their academic pursuits.
It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold, but UNILAG's decision to proceed with exams suggests a commitment to minimizing disruption to students while engaging with ASUU leadership to address the outstanding issues.
