**Vandalism on Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway: Umahi Sounds Alarm**
As Nigeria continues to strive for infrastructural development, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, has expressed deep concern over the spate of vandalism along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. During a recent inspection of the project, Umahi warned that anyone found guilty of vandalizing the highway will face prosecution.
Despite the challenges posed by deep soil conditions, which have led to technical difficulties and increased costs, the minister is optimistic that Section One of the highway will be ready for commissioning by May 20. This flagship project, initiated by the Bola Tinubu administration, aims to connect Lagos to the South-South and South-East regions.
Umahi commended HITECH Construction Company for its diligence in absorbing additional costs arising from unexpected soil conditions without seeking a contract sum increase. However, he condemned the cutting of metal fences and dumping of refuse into drainage manholes along the corridor, describing these actions as reckless and unacceptable.
The minister directed security agencies to arrest and prosecute offenders, while also considering temporary measures to seal manholes and prevent easy access. This incident highlights the importance of protecting public infrastructure, which is crucial for national development.
Umahi's comments on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project are part of a broader context of Nigeria's reform agenda. The minister emphasized that infrastructure delivery remains a central aspect of national development, with Section Two of the coastal highway expected to be completed before the end of the year and bridges across both sections projected for completion by April 2025.
In a cautionary note to contractors, Umahi warned against misusing Advance Payment Guarantees (APGs), stating that firms that have collected mobilization funds without fulfilling their obligations will be held accountable.
As Nigeria continues to invest in its infrastructure, it is essential to address the challenges posed by vandalism and ensure that public assets are protected for the benefit of all citizens. With the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project nearing completion, the country is one step closer to achieving its infrastructural goals.
