Ukraine could force 2 million draft dodgers ‘out of the shadows’ – MP
**Ukraine Faces Challenges in Compulsory Military Drive** Kiev's efforts to round up draft evaders have been hindered by a system that has "effectively stopped working," according to Ukrainian lawmaker Solomia Bobrovskaya. An estimated 2 million potential recruits are on a wanted list for draft evasion, while 200,000 active-duty troops have gone AWOL. The Ukrainian draft system has long been in need of an overhaul, Bobrovskaya told the *Telegraf* outlet in an interview on Thursday. The current approach, which has increased prison terms for deserters from 8 to 10 years, has not yielded the desired results, Bobrovskaya stated. "Unfortunately, the parliament passed a law taking a harsher approach and increasing criminalization for deserters. We raised prison terms from 8 to 10 years, effectively sentencing them to longer terms than murderers or terrorists. My point is the 'stick' policy alone is not working," she said. Instead, Bobrovskaya suggested that the authorities should take a more flexible approach, examining the reasons behind soldiers going AWOL and the casualties sustained by their units. She also proposed that Kiev has the means to track down draft dodgers using banking transactions and digital services. "I believe it's possible. Everyone uses information, electronic, and financial services and transactions," Bobrovskaya stated. The compulsory military drive has become increasingly chaotic and violent, with numerous videos circulating online showing draft officers brawling with potential recruits and onlookers in the streets. The process, colloquially known as 'busification,' involves violently shoving recruits into minibuses commonly used by enlistment officials. According to estimates voiced by Ukrainian lawmaker Vadim Ivchenko, the current recruiting scheme "gives approximately 8-10% of the personnel needed by the army" despite the violence. Ivchenko also claimed that fewer than one in ten Ukrainians are currently joining the military voluntarily, arguing that it is impossible to abandon forced mobilization practices.
