In a significant development in the Oyo State chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Professor Abdulrahman Akinoso, a renowned academic from the University of Ibadan, has been elected as the Chairman of the party's faction loyal to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike. This election, which took place on Saturday at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, has sparked interest among party faithful and observers alike.
Professor Akinoso, a seasoned academic in the department of Food Technology, was elected alongside 38 other executive members of the party, including Dr Abiola Olaonipekun as Secretary, Alhaja Latifah Latifu as Women leader, and Mr A. Adeleke as Youth leader. The election was witnessed by representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and prominent party members.
In his inaugural address, Professor Akinoso emphasized the need for party members to put aside internal differences and focus on promoting the party's interests. He emphasized that the primary responsibility of party executives is to coordinate party activities, ensure harmony among members, and ensure party victory in general elections.
The Professor's words of caution came as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections, for which INEC has released the time-tables. He also announced that the party's e-membership registration will commence next week, urging members to be fully involved and drive membership recruitment.
The election of Professor Akinoso as Chairman has raised hopes among PDP members in Oyo State, who are looking forward to a more united and focused party that can deliver victory in future elections. As the party embarks on this new chapter, observers will be watching closely to see how Professor Akinoso and his team navigate the complexities of party politics in Oyo State.
