Akwa Ibom State, home to several world-class institutions, has taken a significant step towards boosting its education sector with the reappointment of the Oku Ibom Ibibio, Solomon Etuk, as the Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU). The appointment was confirmed by Governor Umo Eno, with Otoabasi Akpan taking over as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
AKSU, established in 2009, has been a vital tool in the state's quest to expand access to higher education and promote research. With two campuses in Ikot Akpaden and Obio Akpa, the university has been instrumental in accelerating human capital development in the oil-rich state. The new appointments are part of Governor Eno's administration's efforts to reposition strategic agencies and institutions to sharpen service delivery and drive effective implementation of the government's ARISE Agenda, particularly in the education sector.
Mr. Etuk, a respected figure in Ibibio land and paramount Ruler of Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, was first appointed chancellor in 2019. His reappointment is a testament to his commitment to the development of the state's education sector. On the other hand, Professor Otoabasi Akpan, a seasoned academic with expertise in biochemistry, has been serving as the acting Vice-Chancellor since August 2025. His confirmation as the substantive Vice-Chancellor is a significant step towards ensuring the continued growth and stability of the institution.
In addition to the appointments, the government also announced the constitution of a new Governing Council for the university. Udoma Udoma, a former Minister of Budget and National Planning, will serve as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council. Other members include Emmanuel Ekuwem, a former Secretary to the State Government, and representatives from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Digital Economy. The Governing Council will be inaugurated on Monday evening in Uyo, marking a new chapter in the history of AKSU.
The appointments and the inauguration of the new Governing Council are expected to have a positive impact on the education sector in Akwa Ibom State. With the right leadership in place, AKSU is poised to play an even more significant role in promoting research, innovation, and human capital development in the state.
