Trump’s Iran war has cost Americans at least $11bn already. And that’s just the start | Arwa Mahdawi
**America's Bill for Iran War: Over $11 Billion and Counting**
In a world where the rules of engagement seem to change daily, it's becoming increasingly difficult to keep track of the cost of America's involvement in the ongoing conflict with Iran. The situation has escalated into a ground invasion of Lebanon by Israel, further complicating an already volatile situation.
Despite the complexity of the situation, the White House continues to send mixed signals. House Speaker Mike Johnson recently claimed that the US is not at war with Iran, contradicting Senator Cynthia Lummis' assertion that America has been in a state of "forever war" with the country for decades.
Irrespective of how one labels this conflict, the human cost is undeniable. Over 1,300 people have been killed in Iran, including over 200 children, while more than 800 people have lost their lives in Lebanon, including over 100 children. Additionally, over 815,000 people have been displaced in the region.
But the consequences of this conflict extend far beyond the Middle East. Americans are also bearing the brunt of the costs. The war is expected to leave a significant dent in the US economy, with the initial six-day costs exceeding $11.3 billion. This figure is likely to rise as the conflict drags on, with the Pentagon yet to account for the costs of repairing damaged facilities, replacing lost equipment, and deploying troops and warships to the region.
The ongoing uncertainty surrounding the conflict is only adding to the economic burden. As the world waits with bated breath for a resolution, Americans can be sure that their pockets will be lighter in the long run. The real question is: how much will this conflict ultimately cost the US, and what will be the long-term consequences for the economy and global stability?
