President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the green light for the expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) to include electronic vehicles. The revamped initiative, now known as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV), will spearhead Nigeria's clean mobility strategy. This involves promoting the use of both gas-driven and electric vehicles nationwide.
The initiative will continue to drive the installation of CNG infrastructure, including mother and daughter stations, integrated refuelling units, CNG vehicles, and equipment, as well as nationwide conversion programmes. Additionally, PiCNG & EV will oversee the development and rollout of electric vehicles, EV charging infrastructure, and related investments across the country.
The inclusion of electric vehicles in the initiative aligns with the government's goal of providing affordable, efficient, and environmentally responsible mobility options. To make this a reality, President Tinubu has directed the executive chairman of PiCNG & EV to establish a coordinated process for the rapid deployment of vehicle conversion kits nationwide.
The president has also ordered the accelerated deployment of mobile refuelling units to expand access to CNG while permanent infrastructure continues to scale. Furthermore, the initiative will collaborate with financial institutions and relevant partners to design cost-effective financing structures for vehicle conversions, making them accessible to the public at a reasonable cost.
President Tinubu's decision to expand the PiCNG mandate to include electric vehicles is a significant step towards promoting sustainable mobility in Nigeria. However, the success of this initiative will depend on the effective implementation of the president's directives, particularly in terms of making vehicle conversions accessible to the public at an affordable cost. The government's partnership with financial institutions and relevant partners to design cost-effective financing structures is a welcome move. Nevertheless, the accelerated deployment of mobile refuelling units and the scaling of permanent infrastructure are crucial to expanding access to CNG and electric vehicles nationwide. The impact of this initiative on everyday Nigerians will be significant, particularly in terms of reducing transportation costs and promoting energy security.
