A windstorm has killed a three-year-old child and destroyed 1,000 houses in communities across Niger State, particularly in the Niger South senatorial district. Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah, confirmed the damage, noting that the worst-hit areas include Mokwa and Bida. The agency has begun rapid assessments in affected local government areas to determine the full extent of the destruction. No other casualties were reported aside from the child. Arah said emergency teams are mobilizing to provide relief materials and support to displaced families. The cause of the storm is not yet known, and no official weather alert was issued prior to the incident. Communities in the affected zones are currently without power and access to some roads has been blocked by debris. NSEMA is working with local authorities to clear pathways and restore basic access.
