“There Were Bodies on the Ground” — Panic as Bomb Blasts Hit Maiduguri’s Monday Market, Hospital Area
An unknown number of people are feared dead, while several others sustained injuries after bomb explosions struck parts of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Monday evening.
According to reports, the explosions occurred at about 7:02 p.m., with blasts recorded at Monday Market and near a security post close to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
The near-simultaneous explosions caused panic in the area as residents and traders scrambled for safety.
Confirming the incident, Mohammed Kafaran, Head of Operations for the Federal Fire Service in Borno State, said emergency personnel had already been deployed to the affected locations.
“Yes, there was a bomb explosion at the Monday Market area around Elkanemi. We have deployed our team there to assess the situation. We will get back to you shortly,” he said.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to Punch Online said several victims were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.
“There were dead bodies on the ground, and many persons with wounds have been rushed to the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri,” one witness said.
Another resident, who requested anonymity, recounted hearing the explosion shortly after leaving a nearby location.
“I had just left the post office and was on my way when I heard a loud sound,” the resident said.
Authorities and emergency responders are currently carrying out rescue and assessment operations at the affected sites. Officials are expected to release further information as investigations and response efforts continue.
