Last year, when the federal government showered in the first cohort of the National Health Fellows, I wrote in its defence not out of sentiment, but out of conviction. It felt bold. It felt timely. Came with an aura that we were ready to think differently about the architecture of our health system. I saw in it an acknowledgment that Nigeria’s health crisis is not merely a deficit of hospitals or manpower, but also a deficit of structured thinking, local intelligence, and policy-minded young professionals embedded where decisions are shaped.
At the time, I believed it signalled a shift.
