Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has claimed that the Nigerian masses still support the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), despite allegations of a power tussle within the party. Makinde made this assertion during a Sallah homage to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors' Forum.
Makinde's comments come as he and other PDP governors face opposition from a faction led by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike. The Oyo State governor alleged that Wike's faction has secured support from the All Progressives Congress (APC), the judiciary, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Makinde's remarks were made during a meeting at the Ramat Presidential Villa in Bauchi State Government House. The governor claimed that Wike had promised to secure the PDP's support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.
"We leave it to Nigerians to judge," Makinde said. "We do not begrudge them; anyone is free to support whom they choose, but they should be transparent about their positions."
Governor Mohammed praised Makinde for his commitment to the Nigerian project and his contributions to the development of Oyo State and the nation.
The ongoing power struggle within the PDP is a stark reminder of the deep-seated divisions within Nigeria's main opposition party. Seyi Makinde's assertion that the Nigerian masses still support the PDP is a claim that requires concrete evidence. The fact that Makinde's faction has secured the support of President Bola Tinubu's administration raises questions about the party's ability to navigate the complex web of alliances and rivalries in Nigerian politics. The PDP's internal friction has significant implications for the party's chances in the 2027 general election, and it remains to be seen how the party will reconcile its differences and present a united front to Nigerians.
