**Kwankwaso: NNPP Fires Back at US Allegations, Writes Congress**
The New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) has taken a bold step in defense of its 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, following allegations of terrorism ties levelled against him by the United States Congress. The party's National Chairman, Ahmed Ajuji, disclosed this in a recent interview on Arise Television, stating that the party swiftly countered what it describes as politically motivated accusations.
According to Ajuji, the NNPP was alarmed by the fact that Kwankwaso was the only individual named specifically in the allegations, while all other entities mentioned were organisations. This, he believes, is a clear case of unfair targeting. "Kwankwaso's name was singled out, and we wondered why. Is it because of his profile as a former governor or his stance on certain issues?" Ajuji asked.
The NNPP chief described the allegations as contentious and possibly driven by politics. He suggested that the US Congress may be on a mission to discredit Kwankwaso and the NNPP. "We believe this is a case of a political witch-hunt, which the US Congress has embarked upon. We will not take this lying down," Ajuji stated firmly.
In response to the allegations, the NNPP formally wrote to the US Congress to clear Kwankwaso's name. Ajuji expressed confidence that the explanations provided by the party would put the matter to rest. "We have provided evidence of Kwankwaso's commitment to religious harmony during his tenure as governor. We believe this will address the misunderstanding and clear his name," he said.
The allegations against Kwankwaso come on the heels of a proposed legislation by US lawmakers aimed at increasing accountability for human rights abuses in Nigeria. The bill, which includes potential sanctions against Fulani militias and Kwankwaso, has sparked controversy. The NNPP sees this as an attempt to undermine Kwankwaso's presidential ambition and discredit the NNPP.
For now, the NNPP remains resolute in its defense of Kwankwaso. Ajuji's words are a clear message to the US Congress: "We will not take this lying down. We will continue to defend our candidate and our party's reputation." The battle for Kwankwaso's reputation has begun, and it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold.
