Nigeria's National Single Window (NSW) trade portal has been soft-launched, aiming to simplify customs clearance for importers and exporters. The portal allows users to submit documents, pay fees, and track approvals in one place, rather than dealing with multiple regulatory agencies such as the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON). This move is expected to reduce the time spent on documentation, which accounts for most of the dwell time at the ports. As a result, business owners may see fewer trips to port offices, reduced costs on runners and fixers, and better visibility on the status of their shipments.

The NSW portal is designed to streamline the process, enabling users to submit licenses, permits, and certificates online and receive decisions faster. Ideally, this would lead to goods being cleared in days instead of weeks. However, the success of this initiative depends on the efficiency of the underlying infrastructure, including port roads, rail links, and logistics. Finance minister Wale Edun has acknowledged that a digital platform alone cannot move goods, and that port inefficiencies could undermine the benefits.

The soft-launch of the NSW portal marks a significant step towards digitizing Nigerian business, but its impact will be closely watched. If successful, it could lead to faster clearance, reduced human touchpoints, less corruption, and lower costs for consumers.
