A bridge linking communities in Niger State's Borgu Local Government Area was destroyed by suspected terrorists using an improvised explosive device (IED) in the early hours of Monday, according to police authorities. The incident occurred at about 2:00 a.m. on March 23, 2026, along Luma Road in Borgu LGA, connecting Luma–Babanna–Agwara communities.
Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun stated that the destruction of the bridge was a deliberate attempt by the terrorists to undermine ongoing security operations in the area. Abiodun noted that security agencies have intensified clearance operations at the affected area and are continuously monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of residents and the restoration of order.
Footage and pictures obtained by Peoples Gazette on Monday showed the remnants of the destroyed bridge, leaving villagers and commuters stranded. The incident has heightened fear among local residents, who have witnessed a surge in terror attacks and violence in recent months. In January, at least 30 people were killed when terrorists attacked a village market in Kebe district, Borgu LGA.
The Niger State government must take decisive action to address the rising tide of terror attacks in the state. The destruction of a vital bridge in Borgu LGA is a stark reminder of the dire security situation in Niger. The state government should work closely with security agencies to intensify clearance operations and restore order in the affected areas. The people of Niger deserve a safe and secure environment to live and do business. The government's inaction in the face of these attacks will only exacerbate the suffering of innocent Nigerians.
