Six die, 12 injured as Benue Links bus, truck collide along Makurdi–Otukpo road
**Six Die, 12 Injured in Fatal Road Crash along Makurdi-Otukpo Highway**
A devastating road accident has occurred along the Makurdi-Otukpo highway in Benue State, leaving six people dead and 12 others injured. The tragic incident involved a Benue Links bus and a truck from the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) that collided on Friday afternoon near the abandoned Benue Burnt Bricks factory.
Eyewitnesses report that the commercial bus was transporting passengers from Makurdi to Otukpo when the accident happened, just three kilometers from the town. Five passengers died instantly at the scene, while another victim succumbed to injuries at the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital Otukpo (FUHSTHO), where the injured were rushed for treatment.
According to a witness, the poor visibility caused by dust from ongoing construction work on the road might have contributed to the accident. "The truck driver probably didn't see the bus approaching due to the dust, and that's how it happened," he explained.
The 12 surviving passengers, including a seven-month-old baby, are receiving treatment at the hospital. A medical source confirmed that they are responding positively to care under the guidance of the medical team.
The transport company, Benue Links, has taken responsibility for the treatment of the injured passengers, stating that six people lost their lives in the accident, including five males and one female.
This unfortunate incident highlights the need for increased caution and attention to road safety in Nigeria, particularly in areas with ongoing construction work. It is essential for drivers to exercise vigilance and adhere to traffic rules to prevent such tragic accidents from occurring.
