Senator Dickson: Electoral Bill Targeting Opposition Won’t Stand
The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, has vowed to oppose any attempt by the House of Representatives to criminalise double party registration, describing the proposed move as an attempt to intimidate opposition parties. Dickson spoke in Abuja during the launch of the NDC Digital Membership Registration Portal while addressing state chairmen, members and other stakeholders of the party. Responding to questions from journalists, the former Bayelsa State governor said discussions in the National Assembly on the amendment to the Electoral Act were targeted at weakening emerging political parties. SPONSOR AD “I know there are talks in the House of Representatives about criminalising double registration, but that law has not been passed. I don’t think, I won’t support that legislation because it is meaningless. “It’s all an orchestrated plan to intimidate opposition parties, particularly the newer ones. And don’t forget, the Constitution guarantees the right and freedom on the part of any Nigerian and every Nigerian to associate freely and disassociate freely too. “So the fact that somebody is registered in a party on Monday does not mean the person cannot resign and join NDC on Tuesday, that is what actually I am inviting them to do. They may have registered at the time there was no NDC alternative.” He urged opposition parties to prepare for the next general election, describing it as a contest between Nigerians and the ruling party. “It is going to be a referendum on them and their performance. “So it is time for Nigerians to organise different polling units, wards, local governments and states across this country to show that it is possible. “All persons in authority have only one vote. From the president down to the governors and every senator, every Nigerian has only one vote.” he added.
