Sailor's fitness app reveals location of French warship
The French Navy's flagship aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, was inadvertently revealed to be in the eastern Mediterranean on March 13 by a member of the French Navy using a fitness tracking app. The Charles de Gaulle, accompanied by frigates, had been deployed to the Mediterranean in early March following US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which led to war in West Asia.
According to Le Monde, the sailor's use of the Strava fitness tracking app broadcast his jogging performance, including a run on March 13 in the middle of the sea northwest of Cyprus. Satellite images confirmed that the aircraft carrier was in the immediate vicinity at the time. This incident is not the first instance of sensitive information being leaked through fitness tracking apps.
In February, the same sailor had been running in Copenhagen, Denmark, across a bridge from Malmo, Sweden, where the Charles de Gaulle was anchored at the time, as shown by Strava data. This raises concerns about the potential for security breaches when using fitness tracking apps.
The French armed forces have stated that appropriate measures would be taken if the report is confirmed. In a statement, they noted that members of the navy are regularly reminded about the risk of security breaches using such apps. "The reported case - if confirmed - does not comply with the current instructions," the statement read.
This incident is not an isolated case. In 2024, Le Monde reported that the bodyguards of President Emmanuel Macron, then-US President Joe Biden, and President Vladimir Putin were inadvertently giving away information about their whereabouts while accompanying them on trips. Furthermore, in 2018, Strava maps showed the locations of US and allied military personnel in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.
