Revealed: Why Ogun State government increased pension payment
**Breaking News: Ogun State Government Introduces New Pension Scheme for Retirees**
In a bid to enhance the welfare of its retirees, the Ogun State government has introduced a new pension enhancement scheme, known as the Additional Pension Benefit (APB). This innovative initiative aims to provide significantly improved benefits to retirees, ensuring they receive a decent standard of living after serving the state.
Under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), the new APB offers payouts ranging from 116 per cent to as high as 280 per cent of a worker's Total Annual Emoluments (TAE). Governor Dapo Abiodun revealed that between 70 and 80 per cent of retiring civil and public servants will now receive higher benefits than what was previously obtainable under the old gratuity system.
This new scheme supersedes the Federal Government's 100 per cent gratuity benchmark, providing a more sustainable model for addressing significant pension liabilities. The Ogun State government has committed to paying gratuities promptly and in improved value, addressing the long-standing issue of delayed payments.
The APB also introduces a one-off lump sum payment at retirement, separate from workers' pension savings. This is a departure from the previous system where retirees withdrew only 25 per cent of their total pension savings.
Labour leaders have praised the APB as a sustainable model that will restore trust and ensure that retirees receive their entitlements on time. With this new scheme, Ogun State joins the league of states in Nigeria that are prioritizing the welfare of their retirees.
The introduction of the APB is a testament to Governor Abiodun's commitment to reforming the pension system in Ogun State. As we continue to navigate the complexities of our pension system, initiatives like the APB offer a glimmer of hope for a more secure and dignified retirement for our civil servants.
In a country where pension liabilities are a significant concern, the Ogun State government's bold move is a welcome development. As we look to the future, it is essential that we prioritize the welfare of our retirees, providing them with a decent standard of living that reflects their years of service to the nation.
