Residents of Bangai Community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State have agreed to work together to end all forms of conflicts in their community. The residents, consisting of Berom natives and Fulanis, made their positions known in a communique issued on Thursday in Riyom. The communique was signed by leaders of the groups during a dialogue organised by the Youth Initiative Against Violence and Human Rights Abuse (YIAVHA).
Leaders from both communities have promised to bridge existing gaps and ensure lasting peace in the community. They have also agreed to unite against external forces that could bring disharmony among them. The residents have committed to adopting proactive and collective steps to stimulate mutual trust, tolerance, and respect for one another.
The communique outlined several key agreements, including the prevention of aggressive grazing practices, strengthening actions against substance abuse, and developing inclusive community by-laws to address drug circulation. The residents also agreed to promote responsible environmental practices and hold joint monthly meetings to promote togetherness.
The recent agreement between the Berom and Fulani communities in Bangai is a significant step towards lasting peace in the Plateau State. The initiative, supported by the UK Government, is a testament to the potential of collaborative action in resolving long-standing conflicts. By addressing issues such as substance abuse, grazing practices, and access to basic amenities, the residents are taking concrete steps towards improved safety and strengthened relationships. The involvement of traditional leaders and the Education Secretary at the Riyom Area Office is also a positive development, as it highlights the commitment of the community to addressing the root causes of their conflicts. As the residents continue to work together, it is essential that they receive the necessary support and resources to ensure the sustainability of their efforts. By doing so, they can create a more peaceful and harmonious community for all.
