Spread the word A double bomb attack struck Maiduguri, Borno state capital, Monday, targeting the Monday Market and the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) shortly after iftar, around 7:20pm. The Borno State Police Command official spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso said the incident was confirmed via a post on his X handle. The statement reads: “Following reports of a suspected explosion at Maiduguri Monday Market and UMTH gate at about 7:20pm, joint security operatives and emergency responders have been deployed. The Police EOD Unit, Base 13 Maiduguri, is on the ground. “Residents are advised to remain calm and avoid the area while assessments continue. Further updates will follow shortly.” Confirming the incident, the Head of Operations of the Federal Fire Service in Borno state, Mohammed Kafaran, said the agency had deployed its team to the scene. He said, “Yes, there was a bomb explosion at the Monday Market area around Elkanemi. We have deployed our team there to assess the situation. We will get back to you shortly.” Eyewitnesses said many of the injured victims had been evacuated to hospitals for treatment. “There were dead bodies on the ground, and many persons with wounds have been rushed to the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri,” one witness said. Another resident, who refused to be named, recounted the moment the explosion occurred. “I had just left the post office and was on my way when I heard a loud sound,” the resident said. Further details are expected as emergency responders continue rescue and assessment operations at the affected locations. For over a decade, Borno state has been and remained theatre of insurgency as terrorists ravaged communities. Though their activities appeared highly curtailed in recent times by the Nigerian troops, they seem to have resurfaced following reports of fresh attacks in Borno communities and military personnel. Year after year, terrorists attacks have spread in parts of North-East, North-West, North-Central and other areas in Nigeria.
