**Electricity Powerhouse Put on Notice: Reps Committee Serves Final Warning to REA Leadership**
In a stern warning, the House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy has issued a final summons to the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Abba Abubakar Aliyu, and the Head of the Nigeria Electrification Programme (NEP), Olufemi Akinyelure. This comes as a result of their repeated failure to appear before the committee investigating the disbursement of funds and implementation of projects in Nigeria's renewable energy sector from 2015 to 2024.
The investigative hearing, which resumed in Abuja on Tuesday, saw the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, express his disappointment over the agency's leadership's lack of compliance with the committee's invitations. Ogene warned that if the duo fails to appear before the committee on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 2 p.m., the lawmakers would be forced to invoke their constitutional powers to enforce attendance.
This development has sparked a jurisdictional dispute within the House of Representatives, with some lawmakers questioning which committee has primary oversight responsibility for the REA. The Committee on Rural Electrification Agency claims that it has the authority to oversee the agency's financial operations and project implementation activities.
The committee's probe is part of the National Assembly's constitutional mandate to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of public and donor funds, particularly in the renewable energy sector. This sector plays a crucial role in rural development and national economic growth.
The REA's electrification programme has been a critical component of Nigeria's efforts to increase access to electricity in rural areas. However, the agency has faced criticism over the years for its slow pace of project implementation and lack of transparency in the disbursement of funds. The committee's investigation aims to shed light on these issues and ensure that the agency is held accountable for its actions.
As the deadline for the REA leadership to appear before the committee approaches, it remains to be seen whether they will comply with the summons or face the consequences of their non-compliance.
