‘Renoir’ Producer’s Drama ‘Life Is Yours’ Follows Cleaner’s Revenge Against Foreign Resort
**"Life Is Yours" - A Gripping Drama of Revenge and Empathy in a Changing Japan**
In a country where the rising cost of living has made it difficult for Nigerians to even visit their beloved resorts, a Japanese drama, "Life Is Yours," brings to the forefront a poignant story of a cleaner's quest for revenge against a foreign-owned luxury resort in her homeland.
Produced by Eiko Mizuno-Gray and Takahashi Naoya, the film tells the story of Kimie, a 71-year-old cleaner, who infiltrates a luxury resort owned by a foreign company that seized her land and led to her husband's untimely death. Seeking justice and revenge, Kimie approaches the young CEO, Lily, but what unfolds is an unexpected and heartwarming maternal bond between the two women.
"Life Is Yours" is one of 17 in-development projects selected for the 24th Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum and boasts a talented production team, including Eiko Mizuno-Gray, producer of the critically acclaimed film "Renoir," which screened in competition at Cannes in 2025.
Directed by Emma Kawawada, "Life Is Yours" marks her second feature film following "My Small Land," which was selected for the 72nd Berlinale Generation section in 2022 and received a Special Commendation from the Amnesty International Film Awards. Variety named Kawawada one of Japan's emerging directors at Cannes in 2025.
The film, shot in Japanese, Cantonese, and English, delves into the complexities of human relationships and the tension between hatred and empathy. Kawawada's fascination with the subject matter stems from her observation of how Japan's increasing inbound tourism has led to a shift in the country's demographics, making it difficult for locals to visit their own resorts.
As Kawawada notes, "The film explores the difficulty and fragile hope of human connection across racial and social divisions." The project's producer, Takahashi Naoya, shares Kawawada's vision, stating that the film "portrays the complexity of human relationships in a changing Japan, where global capital is transforming the country's landscapes and cultures."
"Life Is Yours" promises to be a thought-provoking and emotionally charged drama that will resonate with audiences in Nigeria and beyond. With its timely and universal themes, it is sure to spark conversations about the impact of globalization on local communities and the power of human connection to bridge even the widest of divides.
