**Ramadan: A Call to Nigerian Leaders to Leave a Lasting Legacy** As Nigerians mark the holy month of Ramadan, Islamic clerics are urging our nation's leaders to use this sacred period to reflect on their impact and legacy. At the 7th Annual Ramadan Programme, organised by the Abdulwahid Islamic Foundation in Lagos, scholars, community leaders, and residents gathered to seek spiritual and social guidance. The programme, themed "Leaving a Legacy: Family and Community Impact," served as a reminder that leadership positions are not just about wielding power, but about serving a higher purpose. According to Sheikh Ibrahim Kajola, a guest lecturer at the event, leadership is a sacred trust from Allah, and every leader will be held accountable for their actions and omissions. Kajola likened leadership to shepherding, stressing that a shepherd must account for all placed under his care. He urged leaders to prioritise justice, fairness, and service to humanity, and to fear Allah in all their dealings. The holy month of Ramadan, he said, offers Muslims opportunities for spiritual renewal and deeper devotion, and should inspire leaders and followers alike to reflect on their responsibilities to God and society. For lasting legacy to be built, strong family values are essential. Alhaji Ridwam Abdullahi, the foundation's Chief Imam, emphasised the importance of choosing a spouse carefully, as this lays a solid foundation for raising responsible and God-fearing children. Combining Islamic and Western education helps shape balanced individuals with moral and societal awareness. In a nation like Nigeria, where infrastructural challenges and corruption seem to plague every aspect of our lives, collective efforts are essential to tackle these problems and promote sustainable development. As former Chairman of Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, Hon. Dele Oshinowo, pointed out, community engagement is crucial in national development. He called on citizens to participate actively in civic duties, including elections, to ensure accountable leadership. The clerics' message is clear: Nigerian leaders must use this Ramadan season to reflect on their legacy and make amends for past mistakes. By leaving office with a positive impact, they can ensure a brighter future for generations to come.
