Police arrest seven over NURTW clash in Abuja
Tension erupted at the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) headquarters in Abuja, leading to a clash between union members and unknown individuals. According to the FCT Police Command, a group of about 300 individuals stormed the premises, armed with cutlasses, bottles, bows, and arrows. They were reportedly removing items from the site, sparking a confrontation with other NURTW members.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Mr. Isyaku Sharu, led a team to the scene in a swift response to a distress call. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were attempting to enforce a court order without court sheriffs or authorized officials present. This led to a violent confrontation, resulting in one union member sustaining a severe machete injury to the neck.
The injured victim was rescued, while others with varying injuries were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The FCT Police Command has since arrested seven suspects and charged them to court. Normalcy has been restored in the area, with the command reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all FCT residents.
