The Plateau State University (PLASU) in Bokkos has taken disciplinary action against 76 students for engaging in examination malpractice during the 2024/2025 academic session. The decision was made at the university's 102nd regular senate meeting, which considered the recommendations of the Examination Misconduct Committee.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, the offences ranged from possession of unauthorized materials and mobile phones in examination halls to impersonation and writing answers on parts of the body. The sanctions imposed on the students include rustication for one academic session, compulsory carryover of affected courses, and outright expulsion in severe cases, as outlined in the university's Students' Handbook.
The senate meeting, chaired by Moses Galadima, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), on behalf of Shadrach Best, the Vice-Chancellor, unanimously endorsed the penalties after reviewing the committee's findings. The vice-chancellor reaffirmed the institution's position, stating that PLASU maintains a zero-tolerance policy on examination malpractice and is committed to academic integrity, discipline, and moral standards.
The Examination Misconduct Committee's diligence and adherence to due process were commended by the vice-chancellor. The committee's findings were based on thorough investigations into the alleged examination malpractice cases. The university's stance on academic integrity was reiterated, emphasizing the importance of upholding high standards of conduct among students.
In other business, the Senate ratified final-year undergraduate and postgraduate results for the 2024/2025 academic session. Additionally, the Senate noted that lectures for the new semester had commenced across departments about two weeks earlier. The Director of ICT, Sati Dapel, presented updates on ongoing digital reforms aimed at streamlining students' registration processes.
