**A New Era for Community Policing in Nigeria**
The appointment of Olatunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has sparked a mix of emotions across the nation. While some see it as a fresh start, others are hopeful that the new IGP will sustain the reforms initiated by his predecessor. One group that is particularly optimistic is the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), which has been at the forefront of promoting community policing and grassroots intelligence.
The PCRC, an organization that has been working closely with the Nigeria Police Force to improve public safety and trust, has welcomed Disu's appointment with open arms. In a statement, the National Chairman of the PCRC, Alhaji Ibraheem Mogaji Olaniyan, praised Disu's over three decades of experience in policing, intelligence, and security management, saying it would greatly benefit the Nigeria Police Force.
Olaniyan also took a moment to appreciate the outgoing IGP, Olukayode Egbetokun, for his exceptional leadership, intelligence, and dedication to duty. He recalled Egbetokun's numerous roles, including his stint as Chief Security Officer to the Lagos State Governor, Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, and Commissioner of Police in Kwara State. The PCRC Chairman noted that these assignments prepared Egbetokun for effective leadership of the Force and praised the numerous security gains and institutional reforms achieved under his watch.
Some of the notable achievements of Egbetokun's tenure include the adoption of a three-pronged approach to policing, which emphasizes accommodation and democratic policing standards. He also strengthened intelligence-led policing, enhanced collaboration with other security agencies, and improved coordinated responses to terrorism, insurgency, and violent crimes. The establishment of the Police Special Intervention Squad and nationwide contact centres for rapid response were also notable strides made during his tenure.
The PCRC has committed to continued collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force in promoting public safety, trust, and national security. With Disu at the helm, the committee is hopeful that community policing will continue to thrive, and that the Nigeria Police Force will become an even more effective and responsive institution.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with security challenges, the appointment of Disu presents an opportunity for a fresh start. The PCRC's commitment to community policing and its collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force are crucial in promoting public safety and trust. With the right leadership and support, the Nigeria Police Force can become a more
