Adelabu Remains Top Contender in Oyo 2027 Governorship Race

Adebayo Adelabu, a senator representing Oyo South and a strong contender for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket in Oyo State, remains a top contender for the 2027 election. This is according to an aide to the Minister of Power, Otunba Femi Awogboro, who has dismissed reports that Sharafadeen Alli, another senator from the state, has been chosen as the consensus candidate. Awogboro described the reports as untrue and misleading, stating that such an important decision could not have been taken without the presence of key party leaders, including Bisi Akande and Olusegun Osoba, alongside major stakeholders from Oyo State. The aide noted that if there was any serious move to pick a consensus candidate, leaders across the state would have been involved in the process.

The reports of a consensus candidate emerged following a meeting at the Lagos residence of Bola Tinubu, but Awogboro explained that the gathering was only a Sallah visit to the President and not a political meeting. He added that Adelabu did not attend the visit because he was away for the Lesser Hajj. Awogboro called on party members and supporters of Adelabu to stay calm and continue to support him, maintaining that Adelabu has the experience and background needed to lead the state.

Oyo State is set for a thrilling governorship election in 2027, and Adebayo Adelabu remains a major player. Despite the consensus candidate rumour, Adelabu's experience and background make him a strong contender. The APC will need to carefully consider its candidate selection to stand a chance against Governor Seyi Makinde's likely preferred candidate.
