A man identified as Bukunmi died following a fight over the sharing of N8,000 earned during an Egungun festival procession in Ilare, Osun State. The incident occurred on Friday at around 7:30pm after Bukunmi, Femi and Pelumi, who had participated in the celebration, retired to divide the money collected. Eyewitnesses said Bukunmi and Pelumi, both family members, began arguing over the distribution, prompting Femi to intervene.
During the mediation, Bukunmi reportedly attacked Femi by hitting him in the mouth, which led to Femi allegedly stabbing Bukunmi with a knife. Onlookers rushed the injured man to a hospital, but news later emerged that he died from his injuries. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps intervened at the scene to prevent a mob attack on Femi and handed him over to police at Esa Oke Division.
Police confirmed that the suspect is in custody and that the corpse has been taken to the mortuary for autopsy. The knife used in the attack, the body and the suspect were all taken into police custody. Osun State Police Command spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi stated that investigation is ongoing. "We are aware of the incident. The suspect is with the police. The corpse has been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy. Investigation is on. We have to follow the due process to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death," Ojelabi said.
Femi stepped in to stop a family dispute over N8,000, only to become a suspect in a death linked to the very conflict he tried to resolve. The money involved was barely enough to cover a week's expenses in most households, yet it led to fatal violence. Bukunmi's death shows how quickly small sums can ignite irreversible consequences in communities where tensions are already high. No amount of mediation can hold when emotions override reason, especially where no formal oversight exists for such informal earnings.
