The OPay Fintech firm has announced plans to establish a cybersecurity laboratory at the University of Calabar. The laboratory, which is expected to be implemented by Hunter Flex Intercoms Construction Company, aims to enhance the university's technological infrastructure. According to Itoro Udo, leader of the Opay delegation, the firm's partnership with UniCal began in 2023 and remains committed to delivering impactful projects.
The proposed cybersecurity laboratory will position students ahead of their peers in digital skills and innovation. UniCal Vice Chancellor, Professor Offiong Offiong, has commended Opay for the initiative, describing it as timely and critical. The university is expected to provide necessary support for the project's successful delivery.
Opay has also pledged to support UniCal in hosting the 2026 edition of the Nigeria University Games scheduled for August. The event is expected to be a significant sporting activity, with the university planning to sustain the gains from the games by institutionalising key sporting infrastructure.
The establishment of a cybersecurity laboratory at the University of Calabar is a welcome development, particularly in an era where digital security is paramount. Opay's commitment to supporting UniCal in hosting the 2026 Nigeria University Games is also commendable. However, it is crucial that the university and Opay ensure the timely delivery of the project, which will have a direct impact on the students' digital skills and innovation. The university's plans to institutionalise key sporting infrastructure following the games will also be closely watched. As the country continues to grapple with issues of digital security and sports development, this partnership between Opay and UniCal is a step in the right direction.
